On 17 June 2024, JGSEE hosted JGSEE Talk on “Unlocking the Potential of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) for a Clean Energy Transition”. The lecture was presented by Dr. Wison Luangdilok. The virtual event attracted over 60 participants from Thailand and overseas.

SMRs are a type of advanced nuclear reactor that are smaller compared to conventional nuclear power reactors and designed to be fabricated in a factory and then shipped and installed on site. As nuclear is a low-emission clean energy source, SMRs is poised to support a clean energy transition.

The lecture covered the evolution of fission reactor technology, classifying into Gen I, Gen II, Gen III, Gen III+, and Gen IV, the safety of nuclear power plants, and how SMRs offer improved safety and economics to nuclear energy.

Dr. Wison Luangdilok is a nuclear safety expert with over three decades of experience including the investigations of the Fukushima nuclear accident. He previously worked at Fauske & Associates, a wholly owned subsidiary of Westinghouse Electric, USA and is currently a Principal of H2Technology LLC, and an Adjunct Professor at JGSEE.
