On 3 November 2025, the Joint Graduate School of Energy and Environment (JGSEE) under King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi (KMUTT) hosted a delegation from the National Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (BIOTEC) under the National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA) for a discussion on the future direction of their collaboration in sustainable bioenergy and biorefinery. The meeting took place at KMUTT Bangkhuntien Campus.
The BIOTEC delegation, led by Dr. Kobkul Laoteng and Dr. Warinthorn Songkasiri, Deputy Directors of BIOTEC, comprised researchers from the Biorefinery and Bioproduct Technology Research Group and the Biochemical Engineering and Systems Biology Research Group. They were welcomed by Dr. Annop Nopharatana, Vice President for Bangkhuntien Campus; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Chakrit Tachaapaikoon, Deputy Director of the Pilot Plant Development and Training Institute (PDTI); Prof. Dr. Navadol Laosiripojana, Director of JGSEE; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pipat Chaiwiwatworakul, Deputy Director of JGSEE; and researchers from KMUTT.
The meeting reviewed the achievements of the current phase of BIOTEC–JGSEE collaboration and deliberated the framework for the next five-year phase (2025–2030), which will focus on strengthening joint research and workforce development in bioenergy, biorefinery and bioproducts. Both institutions emphasized the importance of these areas in accelerating Thailand’s transition toward a low-carbon and circular bioeconomy.
The BIOTEC team also visited several KMUTT facilities, including the Integrative Biorefinery Laboratory and Advanced Fuel Processing Laboratory, and attended an introduction session on the Thailand Academy of Sciences (TAS) Platform implemented by JGSEE. These visits highlighted ongoing innovation efforts and potential areas for expanded collaboration.
Researchers from both BIOTEC and JGSEE are core members of Hub Net Zero. Sustainable bioenergy and biorefinery—key focus areas of Hub Net Zero—play a crucial role in enabling cross-sectoral solutions for energy transition and carbon management. The strengthened partnership between BIOTEC and JGSEE will significantly contribute to the Hub Net Zero’s mission to advance Thailand’s sustainable future.
