Prof. Shabbir H. Gheewala of the Joint Graduate School of Energy and Environment (JGSEE), King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi (KMUTT), was recently featured in The Chemical Engineer for being named Thailand’s National Champion in the Frontiers Planet Prize competition.
His award-winning research, published in Sustainable Production and Consumption, applied a planetary boundary-based life cycle assessment to rice production in Pakistan. The study highlighted critical sustainability challenges, such as freshwater eutrophication and excessive water use, and proposed practical solutions including solar-powered irrigation and the adoption of faster-maturing, high-yield rice varieties.
In the news article, Prof. Gheewala expressed hope that this recognition would support the advancement of systems thinking research and contribute to the establishment of a center dedicated to absolute sustainability research.
