Introduction
As the global transition toward net-zero emissions accelerates, nature-based solutions are playing an increasingly important role in climate strategies. Among these, plants and microalgae stand out as promising platforms for carbon capture and sustainable resource production. Through photosynthesis, both absorb carbon dioxide (CO₂) and convert it into biomass, while releasing oxygen into the atmosphere. Microalgae, with their rapid growth rates, high carbon fixation efficiency, and abilility to produce high-value biochemicals offer distinct advantages for carbon capture and industrial applications in sectors such as food, health products, biofuels, and bioplastics. Similarly, food crops like cassava present opportunities to integrate carbon sequestration with food security, contributing to both environmental and socioeconomic resilience.
Recent advances in synthetic biology now offer new possibilities to enhance the carbon capture potential of both plants and microalgae. This seminar will showcase the work of Thai research teams in applying these cutting-edge tools to advance nature-based climate solutions and promote sustainable industrial development.
