New Non-conventional Graduate Programs Approved to Support Net Zero

On 4 March 2025, the Ad Hoc Committee on Higher Education Innovation, under the National Higher Education, Science, Research, and Innovation Policy Council, approved new education programs under the Higher Education Sandbox initiative. Among them are two proposals from the Joint Graduate School of Energy and Environment (JGSEE) at King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi (KMUTT), supported by Hub Net Zero. These programs aim to develop highly skilled professionals in advanced research fields to support Thailand’s net zero objectives.

  • Master’s and Doctoral Programs in Bioinformatics and Systems Biology for Driving Frontier Bio-Circular-Green (BCG) Economy – Designed as tailor-made education models, these programs integrate theoretical knowledge with hands-on research at leading institutions. Adopting a research-based learning approach, they leverage advanced tools and expertise from research institutions. Over the next decade, they aim to train 100 high-level researchers in bioinformatics and systems biology at the master’s and doctoral levels.
  • Master’s and Doctoral Programs in Sustainable Bioenergy and Biorefinery Technology – Following the same approach, these programs focus on developing expertise in bioenergy and biorefinery technology. They equip researchers with the skills to scale up production and translate research into commercial applications. Over the next nine years, these programs aim to train 50 researchers at the master’s and doctoral levels.

Both programs will be implemented under the Future Graduates Platform of the Thailand Academy of Sciences (TAS), which fosters specialized education in science and technology through collaboration among research institutes, universities, and industry.
